Canada's four CC-177 Globemaster IIIs are an integral part of a modernized and strengthened military. This aircraft enables troops to conduct safer and more effective operations. Whether for domestic deployments or overseas missions, strategic airlift is the most efficient way to move large loads over vast distances; reducing the number of crews and stopovers needed, and saving on fuel.

Simply put, the Canadian Forces' need for a strategic airlift capability is a result of the varied missions they carry out in Canada and around the world. This capability is also part of the Canada First Defence Strategy, which provides long-term and predictable funding to ensure that the CF will be a first class, modern, multi-role force, capable of defending Canadians at home and abroad.

The plan to purchase strategic airlift was announced in June 2006. An Advance Contract Award Notice ( ACAN) was issued and identified Boeing as the intended supplier. Once the Boeing C-17 Globemaster III was confirmed as the only aircraft available to meet the needs of the Canadian Forces, the procurement process went into overdrive. The first of the four Boeing CC-177s was delivered to the Canadian Forces on the 11th of August 2007, just over a year after the project was announced, and only six months after the contract was awarded.

The Boeing Company is required to provide full Canadian industrial benefits; for every contract dollar awarded, the contractor committed a corresponding dollar in economic activity in Canada. Under Canada's policy, contractors enter into business relationships that make good business sense and that involve high quality, high technology work, which increase the benefits to both sides and increase the likelihood of sustained partnerships.

he CF's strategic airlift capability fulfills a top NATO requirement, and shows that Canada is taking a leadership role among its allies.
