Equipment Procurement

RG-31 Mk 3 Armoured Patrol Vehicle (APV)

Purchased: 75 vehicles
Acquisition: Competitive procurement, with a contract value $64 million. Options exercised totalled an additional $31 million.

The Armoured Patrol Vehicle is a troop carrier with a proven blast-resistant design that has been in constant use for conducting patrols, command and liaison, and reconnaissance tasks in the mountainous terrain and complex urban centers of Afghanistan.

Fifty of the vehicles were procured early in 2006 as the result of an urgent operational requirement identified for Operation ARCHER. In May of that year they were on the ground in Afghanistan - making it from the bidding process to the battlefield in just five months. Another 25 vehicles arrived in the fall of 2007, bringing the fleet to 75.

The key to their ability to withstand mine explosions is the V-shaped hull which allows the blast to move upwards. The wheels and axle are designed to blow off easily, letting the blast escape without jarring the vehicle. The APV has a stabilized remote weapon station equipped with a day and night sighting system, allowing the operator to fire the weapon from within the vehicle while remaining protected.

Meeting these urgent requirements continues to be a priority, in keeping with Canada First Defence Strategy, which calls for a modern, combat-capable, multi-role force.
