Civilian Personnel

The highly capable workforce of 28,000 dedicated civilian employees at the Department of National Defence (DND) services the three Canadian military environments – air, land and sea.

The Civilian Workforce

As part of the Defence Team, civilian employees in over 70 different types of occupations and over 40 locations across Canada, enable the Canadian Forces (CF) to carry out its missions.

Civilian employees work in a wide variety of roles, including:

Skilled Trades and Labour

DND employees working in skilled trades and labour make up a large part of the civilian workforce, and are currently in high demand.  Apprenticeship training programs are geared for the development of skilled tradespeople such as plumbers, welders, painters, electricians, carpenters, vehicle mechanics and more.

Civilian Leadership

Civilian leadership, working in partnership with the three environments that make up the Canadian Forces (CF), has an important and complementary role in guiding Defence policy representative of the interests of Canadians. Excellence in leadership plays an important part in developing executive and managerial talent. Strategic thinkers, innovative problem solvers, policy makers, team builders, and integrated planners shape and guide the future of the Department.
